Hollow Back
Kyphosis, also commonly known as hump, is a disease that occurs with the spine bending forward. Kyphosis due to posture disorders caused by reasons such as continuously sitting at a desk is recently seen frequently. Although “When a slouching person is commanded to stand erect”, the slouching significantly improves, this is still kyphosis caused by posture disorders.
In structural kyphosis, curve is above 55 degrees when the person is standing up and arms are forwards. The most frequent kyphosis is Schuermann kyphosis that s seen in adolescence at the age range of 10 to 18 and more commonly seen in boys. Although familial factors are considered to be effective, actual reason is not fully known. It arises with the spines losing their rectangular shape and becoming triangular.
Symptoms of Schuermann Kyphosis
Schuermann Kyphosis is generally seen at the ages between 8 and 12. This disease accompanied by pain is more frequent in males. Most common curve is in the back. In some cases the curve is more visible in the area where the back meets the lower back.
Treatment of Schuermann Kyphosis
Kyphosis less than 60 degrees are monitored. Kyphosis up to 75 degrees are treated with corset. As in scoliosis, these corsets specifically designed for the child are worn 20-22 hours a day until the child completes development.
Kyphosis exceeding 75 degrees is operated. Operation is necessary as kyphosis can impact respiratory, circulatory and locomotor systems. After the operation, the patient is discharged in 5 to 7 days. Child can return to school within three weeks.
